Episode 03: Self Care

What is self-care?

Defining what self-care means to us, where the backlash comes from, and how we practice it towards mutual liberation.

I think that having worked in the social justice realm for a long time, there’s often this idea that if you’re not spending every waking moment of your life, and every ounce of energy fighting for change, you’re not committed to the cause, or you’re selfish, or something like that. I think it’s actually completely counterproductive to approach social change that way. I think self-care is whatever keeps us healthy, and grounded, and energized to live into the world we want to create.
— Maureen White

Self-care is all of the things it takes for me to do to myself, or to do with myself or for myself, so that I have additional to give.
— Lawrence Barriner II

When my self-care is, for me, alone, it can feel disembodied from the rest of my life. Whereas, when a community is coming together and caring for each other, a lot of the barriers disappear.
